How to factory reset the Bell 2Wire modems

To factory reset the hub, switch on the hub and wait at least 3 minutes for it to start up normally.

Then insert a pin into the Reset hole at the rear of the hub and hold it there for 10-15 seconds.

The Power light will change from Green to blinking Red. When it changes to a solid Red, you may remove the pin. It will take up to 4 minutes for the hub to start up again.

The hub has now been returned to factory default settings.

Let's Repair - 2wire 2701HG-B gateway

A failed attempt to repair a 2wire DSL gateway, model 2701HG-B. I found and fixed one problem (loose surface mount component), but the unit was still faulty. Just not worth the time to try and fix.

How to recover the Bell 2Wire modems serial number

(New 27 Jan 12)
Graham D. needed to recover the serial number for a 2700HGV running BT v6.1.x firmware. The label on the hub had been removed so both the serial number and default WEP key were missing.
He discovered the procedure described here for recovering the admin password for BT Home Hub v1/1.5 also worked on his 2700HGV. The early Thomson made BT Home Hubs used the serial number for their default admin password. The serial number for 2wire hubs running BT v6.x firmwares is also the factory default admin password. I can confirm too it works on a 2701HGV-C with BT v6.3.x firmware.

Basically, using any web browser (works with IE, FireFox and Opera), and ensuring your computer is using the hub's DNS server, point the web browser to this URL:
https://apps.home
Then view the security certificate of the above page. You should find the serial number buried in the 'Issuer' field.

This is clearly an oversight by 2wire when they introduced using the serial number on BT v6 firmwares for the default password and went to the trouble of removing the serial number from the System Details menu.

Security Advice: Always change the factory default password on the hub.

Unlocking BT 2Wire 2700HGV Business Hub (wireless router)

22 Mar 2012: With the announcement of the all new BT Business Hub 3, I have decided to retire this website. The contents and the website will remain, but no significant changes or updates will be made in the future. Thank you to all those who have contributed to the contents on this website over the last few years.

Sep 2013: Minor update re. 2Wire power supply adapter.

Jan 2014: I had to install a new 2700HGV with v6.1.1.48.1 to replace a 2700HGV which developed a DSL connection fault. To my surprise and annoyance, the firmware was updated to v6.3.9.63 a few days later. In hindsight, I should have applied Adrian C's fix to block the provisioning server from applying the firmware upgrade as I wanted to see if v6.1.1.48.1 would resolve an ongoing wifi issue at the premises.

Feb 2014: The above mentioned hub has now been replaced by a N300 wireless cable router. A 2700HGV now serves as an inexpensive ADSL modem operating in 'bridge' mode attached to the new router.

2Wire 2701HG-G Bell 20 digit Keycode

hello I live in Ottawa ON, Canada and I've called bell several times and they don't seem to understand what I've done. I had cancelled my internet due to finding out my building provides free wireless internet. I found out a few weeks later I didn't like it much and want my own bell back, so I called them and will have service again tomorrow. To get to the point I had flashed my 2wire with the singtel firmware to upgrade it not to unlock it but it did that too. I can't find what is the bell!! keycode. I know how to see what my current keycode is in the 2wire but obviously that does me no good. I've been to the 2wire.com/keycode page or whatever it is and can only find a manual way to set it up which I can't do yet as I have no internet. Is there not one person at bell who knows what I mean? I need you guys Keycode that you use when you get your 2wire modems. Mine thinks its a singtel and rather then doing the manual setup with 100 steps I rather just know what the keycode for bell is.

Bell 2Wire modems forgotten my System Password

BT v5.x firmware
For brand new hubs, no System Password is set up by default on hubs with BT v5.x firmware.

If a system password has been enabled and you do not know what it is, or you have simply forgotten it, the only option is to perform a factory reset.   If you reset the hub, ALL configuration settings will be deleted and you will need to configure the hub again.

Refer to instructions at the bottom of this page for how to factory reset the hub.

SingTel v5.x firmware

For brand new hubs, no System Password is set up by default on hubs with BT v5.x firmware.

A password  '2wire'  is required to enter the Management console:

Is it possible to unbrick a hub?

If you accidentally install the wrong firmware and brick your hub (solid red lights displayed on front panel), then I'm afraid there is no way of recovering from this situation.

If you are in the USA, you may be able to contact 2Wire and they may be able to unbrick the hub for you at your expense.

Need Bell Advice (ADSL2+ Bridge mode + faster

Like the other bell modems that people here flash to unlock (ie the 4200, 5200 etc..), the bell 2wire 2701 modem can also apparently be flashed and unlock by putting a 2700 firmware on it.

From what I have seen it works well.

I do believe this enables you to have access to the functions you want.

All questions about it should be made there i guess.

If you try it let us know how it goes.

If you brick it, call bell and say its defective, play dumb. Besides with the modem fee doubling like it has, you bought and paid for the modem a few times over...
